ARE WE GAMBLING WITH OUR PLANET’S FUTURE?

From 30 November to 11 December 2015 world leaders from over 190 countries will be meeting in Paris for the United Nations 21st Conference on Climate Change. The aim is to agree a global legally binding climate treaty. The need for this is urgent. 2015 is almost certain to take the world over a new threshold of 1⁰C warming above pre-industrial levels, surpassing 2014 as the hottest year ever. Almost all scientists agree that a failure to arrest this trend in the next five years will have extremely damaging impacts on humans and ecosystems in many parts of the world. Island nations could be wiped off the map while sub-Saharan agriculture will be devastated in many regions.

Large cities like London have a major role to play in tackling climate change and the Green Party is committed to playing a leading part in making this happen. A recent UN report states that while 54% of the world’s population now lives in cities, this will increase to 66% by 2050. This means that although nations have a huge role to play in tacking climate change, increasingly cities will too. So it’s more important than ever that London has the Green Party working to make sure our city is liveable, sustainable, less dependent on fossil fuel with less pollution and cleaner air. Hence the importance of electing a Green Mayor and Green Party members for the Greater London Assembly in the elections next May.

Come on December 7th to hear what the Green Party Mayoral candidate and three local Green Party Assembly member candidates have to say about their plans for making London a greener city. There will be an opportunity also to share your ideas about what actions need to be taken both locally as well as across the whole of London. We all need to play a role in putting an end to the dangerous game of gambling with our planet’s future!
